Metaphors in Practice: Lessons from the THRIVE Experience

Plants - our non-verbal teachers. Join us as we share experiences in the use of nature’s metaphors as a therapeutic modality for the veteran population in the THRIVE Program at the New York Botanical Garden. Together, we will reflect on how the use of metaphor can inspire our practice and open new pathways for connection and healing.

Anne Meore LMSW, HTR has been the Garden Projects Coordinator for Bon Secours Charity Health System’s “Garden of Hope” at Good Samaritan Hospital since 2011. She holds advanced degrees in Guidance Counseling and Social Work, a certificate in Permaculture Design and a certificate in Horticultural Therapy from The New York Botanical Garden. Anne is a licensed social worker in NY and a registered horticultural therapist with the American Horticultural Therapy Association. Anne is the Horticultural Therapy Program Coordinator for the THRIVE Program at NYBG (Therapeutic Horticulture and Rehabilitative Intervention for Veteran Engagement), and has been an instructor in the Therapeutic Horticulture Certificate Program for NYBG since 2011.

Brooke Lorenzetti is a Garden Manager at the Edible Academy at The New York Botanical Garden, an instructor for the School of Professional Horticulture and the Therapeutic Horticulture Certificate Program at NYBG. She works as a Therapeutic Horticulture Program Specialist at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center. Brooke received her A.S. in Landscape Horticulture from Oakland Community College, her B.S. in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education from Michigan State University, and her certificate in Horticulture Therapy from New York Botanical Garden.

A highlight of our afternoon agenda, Gwenn Fried will lead an interactive lecture, Nourishment for the Body and Soul: Adding Cooking to your Therapeutic Horticulture Program.
Learn how to enhance therapeutic horticulture offerings utilizing the inherent connectivity of food! Gwenn will provide insight based on Rusk Rehabilitation's Cooking with Nature group from inception to implementation. This includes assessing your space, writing protocols, budgeting and facilitation of groups. With a hands-on cooking group to follow, each participant going home with their own recipe and treat.

Gwenn Fried is the Program Manager at NYU Langone Health's Rusk Rehabilitation. She has been working as a therapist for over 25 years.
And, of course, there will be valuable time to socialize throughout the day!


Registration: Lunch and morning refreshments are included with the conference fee. Please note there is a section to indicate if you have any dietary restrictions.

Parking and Transportation:
Driving: Abundant parking is available onsite, a short walk (with stairs) from the Main House, where we will convene. If you require more accessible parking, please let us know in advance.
Public transportation: The Katonah Metro-North train station (Harlem Line) is less than 4 miles away - volunteers will be made available to shuttle attendees to and from. Please let us know in advance if you plan on traveling via train to coordinate trips.
